Of all the motocross gear that riders use the motocross helmet is by far one of the most important. It could be argued that this is because it protects the most important part of the body the head. The primary goal of the motocross helmet is to protect the head of the rider during impact by using special technology which allows the external shell of the helmet to absorb the knock and not the skull.
Thankfully all racers in motocross must now wear a mx helmet if they wont be allowed to race this has, over the years has reduced the amount of serious damaged caused by crashes and accidents. It wasn’t always like this, helmets were not always mandatory.
The story of the helmet in general goes like this Laurence of Arbia was riding along and because of a dip in the road he didn’t see two people on a bikes and had to serve to avoid them. He went over the handle bars and ended up in a coma in hospital, he was not wearing a motobike helmet. He sadly died six days later. It was then one of the neuro surgeons that led a long investigation into the motobike helmet and then this led to wide use of helmets for civilians and the military.
The motocross helmets were obviously developed after this as the sport began to take off the late 60’s and 70’s. This helmet was different as it was not a full face one only a half faced one. This is so riders can wear goggles.
There has been several advancements in the technology and materials used to make motocross helmets over the last three decades, with has helped increase the safety of the sport and the introduction of neck braces and spinal protection has meant that the risk of serious injury has been greatly reduced but is still a present factor.
One of these advancements has been by manufacturer Bell they have spent a great deal of time and money into an inner skin in the helmet aimed at improving the protection rate of the skull. It was not that long ago that mountain manufactures would make helmets with polystyrene foam inners, this new advancement just shows how far manufacturing techniques and technology has progressed over time.
